Before 1960 there were a number of golf facilities in Cuba but currently there are only two golf courses in Cuba: one in Varadero and a nine-hole course in Havana. This latter course has wonderful, tree-lined fairways but its greens and bunkers are in poor condition.

My first visit to Newfoundland was dramatic. It was late May 1953 and our frigate, HMCS La Hulloise, stuffed with seasick officer cadets, sailed through the Narrows into St. John’s harbor. The Narrows are rightly named. 61 meters across and flanked by limestone cliffs. The entrance is tricky in fog, and depending on the season, fog is a regular feature.

L’Europe Centrale est le nouveau terme utilisé par les agences de voyage par contraste avec l’Europe de l’Est, lorsque cette dernière était isolée des pays de l’Ouest par le fameux rideau de fer. L’époque soviétique n’est plus et les pays comme la Hongrie, la Slovénie et la République Tchèque sont devenues des hauts lieux du tourisme mondial. Bien entendu, l’Autriche était juste à la porte de l’Europe de l’Est et elle avait survécu à l’avance des soviets. Cette région du monde est l’une des plus magnifiques à visiter pour ceux que l’histoire intéresse. Mon récit n’entreras pas dans tous les détails historiques trop nombreux mais se voudra un aperçu des beautés à découvrir dans cette région.
Nous avons expérimenté la version voyage organisé en autocar pour cette visite qui s’étala du 6 au 17 septembre 2018. La température était idéale variant entre 25C et 30C. Le voyagiste fournissait un accompagnateur très expérimenté qui faisait la coordination avec les guides locaux dans chacune des villes visitées. Les hôtels avaient été méticuleusement choisis pour le rapport qualité/prix et localisés centralement, de façon à permettre de belles sorties par temps libres. Le départ du Canada s’effectuait par Air Canada Toronto-Budapest à l’aller et Prague-Toronto pour le retour. Donc un minimum d’escales.
La première ville visitée fut Budapest de laquelle nous n’avions pas beaucoup d’attente. À notre grande surprise, cette ville regorge de magnifiques édifices en bordure du beau Danube bleu! Il y a plusieurs rues piétonnière avec de nombreux touristes et clients locaux. Anciennement il y avait la ville de Buda d’un côté du Danube et Pest de l’autre. Elles sont maintenant réunies en une seule ville qui est également le siège du Gouvernement hongrois avec son parlement, l’un des plus beaux édifices d’Europe. Nous avons fait une mini croisière sur la Danube en soirée pour voir l’illumination de tous les beaux édifices de Budapest.

Temiskaming Treasures

....you can go back home again. And that is what I did a couple of weeks ago.
New Liskeard is a pleasant town of about 4,000 in Northern Ontario at the head of Lake Temiskaming that I left in 1952 when I was 14 and had only revisited briefly twice - the last time almost 40 years ago. Not that I had anything against returning, it’s just that studies, life overseas, jobs, family and all that made the 500 km drive from Ottawa something to be constantly set aside for another year (or decade).

Paul et Suzanne sont d’avides croisiéristes et ils ont choisi l’Adriatique et la Méditerranée de l’Ouest pour un magnifique voyage de 11 jours à bord du Celebrity Constellation avec environ 2000 passagers.

Pour les personnes qui aiment la propreté, l’ordre, l’architecture, les parcs, l’honnêteté et la gentillesse des locaux, la Scandinavie est imbattable. Mon épouse Suzanne et moi (Paul Desbiens) avons passés trois jours à Copenhague avant de nous embarquer sur le Regal Princess (4,200 passagers) pour une croisière de 11 jours nous menant vers Oslo (Norvège), Warnemunde (Allemagne), Tallin (Estonie), St. Petersburg (Russie), Helsinki (Finlande) et Stockholm (Suède). Ce voyage avait lieu du 20 mai au 3 juin, 2016, l’une des meilleures périodes de l’année car l’ensoleillement débute très tôt le matin et se termine vers 22h30. Ma ville préférée fut Copenhague et ce fut Stockholm dans le cas de Suzanne. Voici en bref quelques photos évocatrices de nos diverses excursions.
I gazed out from my dark hotel room into a bitterly cold "Peking"* evening. It was February 1976 and acrid dust from countless charcoal fires hung in thick, grey clouds over the city, coating buildings, streets and people alike in a ghostly pallor. Though it would have been frowned upon, one could have shot a cannon down any of the broad boulevards surrounding Tiananmen Square and only clipped the odd cyclist.

This tour takes us across the Ottawa river and west into the region of Quebec known as the “Pontiac”. To begin, cross one of the bridges to the Province of Quebec and find your way to highway 148 west (ouest in French). We started from our home in Blackburn Hamlet, took Hwy 174 west, exited on the Vanier Parkway, then down to Sussex drive and across the Alexandria Bridge (the one Next to the National Gallery) then straight ahead to HWY 148.

As my 70th birthday loomed I knew the decision whether to buy a motorcycle could not be further postponed; I had to take the plunge or forget about one of the main items on my bucket list. For decades I had put it off, deferring to the opinion of friends and loved ones that getting on a motorcycle at any age, but especially in one’s dotage, was foolhardy to the point of idiotic. However, after ruminating on this, viewing the question from several angles, I felt such biased advice could be discounted: none of the motorcycle gainsayers had the slightest desire to get on one. I opened Kijiji and searched on ‘motorcycle’.

Maxine and I have, over the past few summers, enjoyed traveling to some of the many summer theatre venues in Eastern Ontario. One particular attraction is that most companies offer afternoon performances, which means we can enjoy a pleasant country drive to the theatre, perhaps stopping in at one of the Historical Sites mentioned elsewhere in this series, enjoy a unique lunch, take in a good show and then arrive back home before the sun is down! You can also do the Historical visit, attend the theatre, and then enjoy a pleasant dinner; heading for home or spending the night in one of the many B&B’s that dot the countryside, as you wish.
